Atlanticus on Your Credit Report

In short: Atlanticus Services Corporation operates consumer credit programs aimed primarily at consumers with limited or damaged credit, marketed under brand names including Fortiva and Aspire. It is a program operator and servicer rather than a chartered bank; the underlying accounts are issued by partner banks that hold the actual charters. Information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable can be disputed under the FCRA. Outcomes depend on what the furnisher can verify, and results vary.

Who Atlanticus actually is

Who actually issues this credit

Atlanticus Services Corporation is not itself an FDIC-insured bank and holds no FDIC certificate. It operates consumer credit programs — Fortiva and Aspire among them — whose accounts are issued by partner banks. No FDIC certificate is asserted on this page because none exists for this entity.

What makes this creditor different

Atlanticus is one of only two companies in this dataset whose top CFPB complaint category is fees or interest rather than disputed purchases — 284 of 1,250 complaints since January 2025 — and unlike every bank here it holds no FDIC certificate of its own, operating instead through partner-bank issuance.

How Atlanticus appears on your credit report

Partner-bank structures create a recurring identification problem: the tradeline may report under the program brand, under the servicer, or under the issuing bank, and the consumer recognises none of them. Before disputing an Atlanticus-linked account as fraudulent, check whether you opened a Fortiva or Aspire account or financed a purchase at a retailer. If the tradeline names an entity you have no relationship with and no matching account exists, dispute it as not yours.

Grounds to dispute a Atlanticus entry

Each of these is a reason a Atlanticus tradeline may be inaccurate or unverifiable. None of them assures removal — they are the angles worth checking on your own report.

  • ◆Tradeline reporting under a program brand the consumer does not recognise
  • ◆Same account reporting under both the program brand and the issuing bank
  • ◆Fees applied under program terms and reported as an unpaid principal balance
  • ◆Account balance or credit limit reported incorrectly
  • ◆Payment reported late when it was made inside the grace period
  • ◆Date of first delinquency re-aged to extend how long it can report
  • ◆Account still reporting as open after it was closed, or vice versa
  • ◆Duplicate tradeline for the same account after an internal transfer
  • ◆Account belongs to someone else with a similar name, or is the result of identity theft

Disputing an original creditor is not the same as disputing a collector

Atlanticus is an original creditor — the institution whose name was on the account when it was opened. That matters for two reasons. First, the FDCPA, which governs debt collectors, generally does not apply to a creditor collecting its own debt in its own name, so the “debt validation” request that works against a collection agency is not the right tool here. Second, as the furnisher of the tradeline, Atlanticus has direct obligations under FCRA §623 to investigate a dispute you send it and to correct or delete information it cannot verify as accurate.

Dispute with the bureaus — FCRA §611

File with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. They must generally investigate within 30 days and tell the furnisher. Free, and you can do it yourself.

Dispute with the furnisher — FCRA §623

Send Atlanticus a direct written dispute. It must investigate and must not continue reporting information it knows is inaccurate. Keep copies and proof of delivery.

Atlanticus questions, answered

Is Atlanticus a bank?

No. Atlanticus Services Corporation is not an FDIC-insured depository institution and holds no FDIC certificate. It operates and services consumer credit programs such as Fortiva and Aspire, while the actual credit accounts are issued by partner banks that hold the charters.

Why is Fortiva or Aspire on my credit report?

Those are program brands associated with Atlanticus. If you opened a card under either brand, or financed a purchase at a retailer using one of these programs, the resulting account is furnished to the credit bureaus. The name on the tradeline may be the program brand, the servicer, or the issuing bank.

What do people complain about most with Atlanticus?

Fees or interest, which accounts for 284 of 1,250 CFPB credit-card complaints since January 2025 — making Atlanticus one of only two companies in this dataset where fees outrank disputed purchases. Other leading categories are problems with a purchase shown on a statement (237), getting a credit card (206), and closing your account (126). How do I dispute an Atlanticus account?

Dispute with all three credit bureaus under FCRA §611 and with the furnisher under FCRA §623. Because these are partner-bank programs, check your report for the same account appearing more than once under the program brand and the issuing bank. Send the dispute in writing and keep copies.
