BNY Mellon on Your Credit Report

In short: The Bank of New York Mellon operates under FDIC certificate 639 from New York, New York, on a charter established in 1851. It is primarily an institutional custody and asset-servicing bank rather than a mass-market consumer card issuer, though it maintains consumer-facing wealth and deposit relationships. Information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable can be disputed under the FCRA. Outcomes depend on what the furnisher can verify, and results vary.

What makes this creditor different

BNY Mellon operates under FDIC certificate 639, chartered in New York, NY and established January 1, 1851 — 175 years of continuous charter history. Since January 2025 the CFPB has logged 8 credit-card complaints naming BNY Mellon, the largest share of them about a disputed purchase on a statement (5).

How BNY Mellon appears on your credit report

BNY Mellon is not a mass-market card issuer, so a BNY Mellon tradeline on an ordinary consumer report is unusual and worth a close look. It most often reflects a wealth-management or securities-based lending relationship rather than a retail card. If you have no private-banking or brokerage relationship with BNY Mellon, a tradeline in its name is a strong candidate for a mixed file or identity-theft dispute.

Grounds to dispute a BNY Mellon entry

Each of these is a reason a BNY Mellon tradeline may be inaccurate or unverifiable. None of them assures removal — they are the angles worth checking on your own report.

  • ◆Unrecognised tradeline where the consumer has no custody or wealth relationship
  • ◆Securities-based line of credit reported as an unsecured revolving account
  • ◆Account persisting after a wealth relationship was transferred
  • ◆Account balance or credit limit reported incorrectly
  • ◆Payment reported late when it was made inside the grace period
  • ◆Date of first delinquency re-aged to extend how long it can report
  • ◆Account still reporting as open after it was closed, or vice versa
  • ◆Duplicate tradeline for the same account after an internal transfer
  • ◆Account belongs to someone else with a similar name, or is the result of identity theft

Disputing an original creditor is not the same as disputing a collector

BNY Mellon is an original creditor — the institution whose name was on the account when it was opened. That matters for two reasons. First, the FDCPA, which governs debt collectors, generally does not apply to a creditor collecting its own debt in its own name, so the “debt validation” request that works against a collection agency is not the right tool here. Second, as the furnisher of the tradeline, BNY Mellon has direct obligations under FCRA §623 to investigate a dispute you send it and to correct or delete information it cannot verify as accurate.

Dispute with the bureaus — FCRA §611

File with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. They must generally investigate within 30 days and tell the furnisher. Free, and you can do it yourself.

Dispute with the furnisher — FCRA §623

Send BNY Mellon a direct written dispute. It must investigate and must not continue reporting information it knows is inaccurate. Keep copies and proof of delivery.

BNY Mellon questions, answered

Is BNY Mellon FDIC-insured?

Yes. BNY Mellon appears in the FDIC's BankFind institution directory under certificate 639, headquartered in New York, NY, with a charter established January 1, 1851.

What do people complain to the CFPB about most with BNY Mellon?

Of the 8 credit-card complaints naming BNY Mellon in the CFPB's public database since January 2025, the largest single category is "Problem with a purchase shown on your statement" at 5, followed by "Closing your account" (1). These are public complaint statistics about the company, not a prediction about any individual account. Snapshot taken 2026-10-17.

How do I dispute a BNY Mellon account on my credit report?

You can dispute with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion under FCRA §611, and you can dispute directly with BNY Mellon as the furnisher under FCRA §623. Both routes are free and you can do them yourself. Put it in writing, identify the account by its last four digits and open date, state exactly what is inaccurate, and keep copies. Whether an item changes depends on what the furnisher can verify, and results vary.

How long can a BNY Mellon delinquency stay on my report?

A delinquent or charged-off account can generally report for up to seven years from the date of first delinquency — the original missed payment that was never brought current. That clock does not restart because the account was charged off, sold, or transferred. If the date of first delinquency has been moved forward, that re-aging is itself a reportable FCRA inaccuracy.
