American First Finance on Your Credit Report

In short: American First Finance provides point-of-sale financing and lease-to-own products through retail merchants, including furniture, tyres, auto repair and similar goods and services, serving consumers who often do not qualify for conventional credit. Information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable can be disputed under the FCRA. Outcomes depend on what the furnisher can verify, and results vary.

Who American First Finance actually is

Who actually issues this credit

American First Finance is not a chartered bank. Its own disclosures state that a consumer instalment loan is originated by FinWise Bank, a Utah-chartered bank, Member FDIC, and sub-serviced by AFF. No FDIC certificate is asserted for AFF because the charter belongs to FinWise Bank.

What makes this creditor different

American First Finance operates both lease-to-own and bank-originated loan products side by side, and its own disclosures draw the line explicitly: the bank loan is originated by FinWise Bank and merely sub-serviced by AFF. That means two customers at the same retailer can hold legally different obligations. The CFPB recorded 11 credit-card complaints naming AFF since January 2025, led by getting a credit card (4).

How American First Finance appears on your credit report

AFF offers two structurally different products at the same checkout — a lease-to-own agreement and a bank-originated instalment loan — and the consumer may not know which one they signed. The distinction matters because a lease and a loan have different legal consequences, different total costs and different reporting treatment. If the tradeline characterises your obligation differently from your contract, that is a concrete and documentable dispute.

Grounds to dispute a American First Finance entry

Each of these is a reason a American First Finance tradeline may be inaccurate or unverifiable. None of them assures removal — they are the angles worth checking on your own report.

  • ◆Lease-to-own agreement reported as a conventional instalment loan or vice versa
  • ◆Loan reporting under FinWise Bank rather than American First Finance
  • ◆Balance reflecting full lease cost after goods were returned
  • ◆Account balance or credit limit reported incorrectly
  • ◆Payment reported late when it was made inside the grace period
  • ◆Date of first delinquency re-aged to extend how long it can report
  • ◆Account still reporting as open after it was closed, or vice versa
  • ◆Duplicate tradeline for the same account after an internal transfer
  • ◆Account belongs to someone else with a similar name, or is the result of identity theft

Disputing an original creditor is not the same as disputing a collector

American First Finance is an original creditor — the institution whose name was on the account when it was opened. That matters for two reasons. First, the FDCPA, which governs debt collectors, generally does not apply to a creditor collecting its own debt in its own name, so the “debt validation” request that works against a collection agency is not the right tool here. Second, as the furnisher of the tradeline, American First Finance has direct obligations under FCRA §623 to investigate a dispute you send it and to correct or delete information it cannot verify as accurate.

Dispute with the bureaus — FCRA §611

File with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. They must generally investigate within 30 days and tell the furnisher. Free, and you can do it yourself.

Dispute with the furnisher — FCRA §623

Send American First Finance a direct written dispute. It must investigate and must not continue reporting information it knows is inaccurate. Keep copies and proof of delivery.

American First Finance questions, answered

Is American First Finance a bank?

No. American First Finance is not an FDIC-insured bank and holds no FDIC certificate. Its own disclosures state that its consumer instalment loans are originated by FinWise Bank, a Utah-chartered bank, Member FDIC, and sub-serviced by AFF.

Why is American First Finance on my credit report?

If you financed a purchase at a retailer through American First Finance, the resulting lease or loan can be furnished to the bureaus. The tradeline may name American First Finance, AFF, or the originating bank, FinWise Bank.

What do people complain to the CFPB about most with American First Finance?

Of the 11 credit-card complaints naming American First Finance in the CFPB's public database since January 2025, the largest category is "Getting a credit card" at 4, followed by "Problem when making payments" (2). Snapshot taken 2026-10-17. These are public statistics about the company, not a forecast for your account.

How do I dispute a American First Finance account?

Dispute with all three bureaus under FCRA §611 and with the furnisher under FCRA §623. With a partner-bank program, check your report for the same debt appearing twice — once under the program brand and once under the issuing bank — because that duplicate is a common and genuinely disputable error. Send it in writing and keep copies; results vary with what can be verified.
