Best Egg on Your Credit Report

In short: Best Egg, operated by Marlette Funding, is an online personal-loan platform offering fixed-rate instalment loans for debt consolidation, home improvement and similar purposes. The loans are originated by partner banks rather than by Marlette itself. Information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable can be disputed under the FCRA. Outcomes depend on what the furnisher can verify, and results vary.

Who Best Egg actually is

Who actually issues this credit

Best Egg's operator Marlette Funding is not a chartered bank. Best Egg's own disclosures state that Best Egg loans are personal loans made by Cross River Bank, a New Jersey chartered bank operating from its Wilmington, Delaware branch, Member FDIC, or by Column N.A., Member FDIC. No FDIC certificate is asserted for Marlette because the charters belong to those partner banks.

What makes this creditor different

Best Egg discloses two distinct originating banks for the same consumer product — Cross River Bank and Column N.A. — meaning two borrowers with identical Best Egg loans can have different furnishers on their credit reports. The CFPB recorded 71 credit-card complaints naming Marlette Funding since January 2025, led by a disputed purchase on a statement (15).

How Best Egg appears on your credit report

Best Egg is heavily used for debt consolidation, which creates a specific and very common reporting error: the consolidation loan appears as a new tradeline while the paid-off cards should drop to zero balance. If the old balances do not update, the consumer appears to owe both the loan and the original debts, badly distorting their total obligations. Check that every account the loan paid off reports a zero balance.

Grounds to dispute a Best Egg entry

Each of these is a reason a Best Egg tradeline may be inaccurate or unverifiable. None of them assures removal — they are the angles worth checking on your own report.

  • ◆Consolidated credit cards still reporting balances after being paid off by the loan
  • ◆Loan reporting under Cross River Bank or Column N.A. rather than Best Egg
  • ◆Instalment loan reporting open after final payoff
  • ◆Account balance or credit limit reported incorrectly
  • ◆Payment reported late when it was made inside the grace period
  • ◆Date of first delinquency re-aged to extend how long it can report
  • ◆Account still reporting as open after it was closed, or vice versa
  • ◆Duplicate tradeline for the same account after an internal transfer
  • ◆Account belongs to someone else with a similar name, or is the result of identity theft

Disputing an original creditor is not the same as disputing a collector

Best Egg is an original creditor — the institution whose name was on the account when it was opened. That matters for two reasons. First, the FDCPA, which governs debt collectors, generally does not apply to a creditor collecting its own debt in its own name, so the “debt validation” request that works against a collection agency is not the right tool here. Second, as the furnisher of the tradeline, Best Egg has direct obligations under FCRA §623 to investigate a dispute you send it and to correct or delete information it cannot verify as accurate.

Dispute with the bureaus — FCRA §611

File with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. They must generally investigate within 30 days and tell the furnisher. Free, and you can do it yourself.

Dispute with the furnisher — FCRA §623

Send Best Egg a direct written dispute. It must investigate and must not continue reporting information it knows is inaccurate. Keep copies and proof of delivery.

Best Egg questions, answered

Is Best Egg a bank?

No. Marlette Funding, which operates Best Egg, is not an FDIC-insured bank and holds no FDIC certificate. Best Egg's own disclosures state that its personal loans are made by Cross River Bank or Column N.A., both Members FDIC.

Why is Best Egg on my credit report?

If you took a Best Egg personal loan, it is furnished to the bureaus as an instalment account. The furnisher name may be Best Egg, Marlette Funding, Cross River Bank or Column N.A., depending on which bank originated your loan.

What do people complain to the CFPB about most with Best Egg?

Of the 71 credit-card complaints naming Best Egg in the CFPB's public database since January 2025, the largest category is "Problem with a purchase shown on your statement" at 15, followed by "Fees or interest" (13). Snapshot taken 2026-10-17. These are public statistics about the company, not a forecast for your account.

How do I dispute a Best Egg account?

Dispute with all three bureaus under FCRA §611 and with the furnisher under FCRA §623. With a partner-bank program, check your report for the same debt appearing twice — once under the program brand and once under the issuing bank — because that duplicate is a common and genuinely disputable error. Send it in writing and keep copies; results vary with what can be verified.
