Bread Financial on Your Credit Report

In short: Bread Financial, formerly Alliance Data Systems, is a major issuer of private-label and co-branded store credit cards. Its cards have historically been issued through two banks: Comenity Bank in Delaware and Comenity Capital Bank in Utah. FDIC records show the Comenity Bank charter ended October 1, 2026, with Comenity Capital Bank remaining active under certificate 57570. Information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable can be disputed under the FCRA. Outcomes depend on what the furnisher can verify, and results vary.

What makes this creditor different

Bread Financial is the only major issuer whose number-one CFPB complaint category is fees or interest rather than disputed purchases — 1,940 of 5,895 complaints since January 2025 — and its Comenity Bank charter (FDIC cert 27499, Wilmington, Delaware) formally ceased on October 1, 2026, leaving Comenity Capital Bank (cert 57570, Draper, Utah) as the surviving charter.

How Bread Financial appears on your credit report

This lane's most time-sensitive reporting issue. With the Comenity Bank charter ended as of October 1, 2026, accounts are consolidating onto Comenity Capital Bank. Charter consolidations are a classic trigger for duplicate tradelines — the same account reporting once under the old bank and once under the new one — and for account-status and open-date errors introduced during data migration. If you hold a Comenity-issued store card, this is a good moment to read all three reports carefully.

Grounds to dispute a Bread Financial entry

Each of these is a reason a Bread Financial tradeline may be inaccurate or unverifiable. None of them assures removal — they are the angles worth checking on your own report.

  • ◆Same store card reporting under both Comenity Bank and Comenity Capital Bank after the charter consolidation
  • ◆Open date reset to the migration date rather than the original account-opening date
  • ◆Deferred-interest promotional charge applied retroactively and disputed as a fee error
  • ◆Legacy account still reporting under the Alliance Data name
  • ◆Account balance or credit limit reported incorrectly
  • ◆Payment reported late when it was made inside the grace period
  • ◆Date of first delinquency re-aged to extend how long it can report
  • ◆Account still reporting as open after it was closed, or vice versa
  • ◆Duplicate tradeline for the same account after an internal transfer
  • ◆Account belongs to someone else with a similar name, or is the result of identity theft

Disputing an original creditor is not the same as disputing a collector

Bread Financial is an original creditor — the institution whose name was on the account when it was opened. That matters for two reasons. First, the FDCPA, which governs debt collectors, generally does not apply to a creditor collecting its own debt in its own name, so the “debt validation” request that works against a collection agency is not the right tool here. Second, as the furnisher of the tradeline, Bread Financial has direct obligations under FCRA §623 to investigate a dispute you send it and to correct or delete information it cannot verify as accurate.

Dispute with the bureaus — FCRA §611

File with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. They must generally investigate within 30 days and tell the furnisher. Free, and you can do it yourself.

Dispute with the furnisher — FCRA §623

Send Bread Financial a direct written dispute. It must investigate and must not continue reporting information it knows is inaccurate. Keep copies and proof of delivery.

Bread Financial questions, answered

What happened to Comenity Bank?

FDIC records show the Comenity Bank charter — certificate 27499, Wilmington, Delaware, established May 1, 1989 — ceased to be active with an effective end date of October 1, 2026. Comenity Capital Bank, certificate 57570 in Draper, Utah, remains active. Both operate under the Bread Financial brand. If your store card was issued by Comenity Bank, check that it has not ended up reporting twice.

Why is Comenity on my credit report?

Comenity is the issuing bank behind a large number of store-branded credit cards. If you opened a retail card, Comenity or Comenity Capital Bank may be the bank that actually extended the credit and therefore furnishes the tradeline. The retailer's name is the brand on the card; the bank is the creditor.

Why does Bread Financial get so many fee complaints?

Of 5,895 CFPB credit-card complaints since January 2025, 1,940 concern fees or interest — the highest share of any major issuer and the only one where fees outrank disputed purchases. Store cards commonly carry deferred-interest promotions, where interest accrues from day one and is added retroactively if the balance is not cleared before the promotion ends. Figures from the CFPB public complaint database as of October 15, 2026.

What was Alliance Data Systems?

Alliance Data Systems was Bread Financial's former corporate name. Older tradelines and collection records can still reference it. An account naming Alliance Data and one naming Bread Financial or Comenity may be the same underlying account, so confirm before treating them as separate debts.
