Synchrony Bank on Your Credit Report

In short: Synchrony Bank is a Utah-chartered bank operating under FDIC certificate 27314, on a charter established in 1988. It is the largest provider of private-label store credit cards in the United States, issuing the cards that carry a retailer's name, as well as the CareCredit health-and-wellness card. It was formerly GE Capital Retail Bank, which is why older tradelines can still surface under the GE name. Information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable can be disputed under the FCRA. Outcomes depend on what the furnisher can verify, and results vary.

What makes this creditor different

Synchrony is the only top-five complaint-volume issuer whose fees-and-interest complaints (3,054) nearly match its disputed-purchase complaints (3,444) — a signature of deferred-interest store-card promotions, and a pattern that does not appear at any general-purpose issuer of comparable size.

How Synchrony appears on your credit report

Deferred-interest promotions are the defining Synchrony issue. On a 'no interest if paid in full by' plan, interest accrues from day one and is retroactively added to the balance if any portion remains at the end of the promotional window. A consumer who believes they paid on time can discover a large retroactive interest charge, then a late payment on top of it. When disputing, the question is usually whether the promotional terms and the payoff date were disclosed and applied correctly — not whether the account exists.

Grounds to dispute a Synchrony entry

Each of these is a reason a Synchrony tradeline may be inaccurate or unverifiable. None of them assures removal — they are the angles worth checking on your own report.

  • ◆Retroactive deferred-interest charge applied after the consumer believed the promotion was paid off
  • ◆Promotional plan payment allocated to a different balance, triggering a late fee
  • ◆Old tradeline still reporting under GE Capital Retail Bank after the Synchrony rebrand
  • ◆Store card reporting under the retailer's name and separately under Synchrony
  • ◆Account balance or credit limit reported incorrectly
  • ◆Payment reported late when it was made inside the grace period
  • ◆Date of first delinquency re-aged to extend how long it can report
  • ◆Account still reporting as open after it was closed, or vice versa
  • ◆Duplicate tradeline for the same account after an internal transfer
  • ◆Account belongs to someone else with a similar name, or is the result of identity theft

Disputing an original creditor is not the same as disputing a collector

Synchrony Bank is an original creditor — the institution whose name was on the account when it was opened. That matters for two reasons. First, the FDCPA, which governs debt collectors, generally does not apply to a creditor collecting its own debt in its own name, so the “debt validation” request that works against a collection agency is not the right tool here. Second, as the furnisher of the tradeline, Synchrony Bank has direct obligations under FCRA §623 to investigate a dispute you send it and to correct or delete information it cannot verify as accurate.

Dispute with the bureaus — FCRA §611

File with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. They must generally investigate within 30 days and tell the furnisher. Free, and you can do it yourself.

Dispute with the furnisher — FCRA §623

Send Synchrony Bank a direct written dispute. It must investigate and must not continue reporting information it knows is inaccurate. Keep copies and proof of delivery.

Synchrony Bank questions, answered

Why does Synchrony appear on my credit report when I never opened a Synchrony account?

Synchrony is the behind-the-scenes issuer for a very large number of store-branded cards and for CareCredit. If you opened a store card at a retailer or financed a medical or dental procedure, Synchrony is likely the bank that actually extended the credit, so it is the entity that furnishes the tradeline. Check the open date and last four digits against your records before disputing it as fraudulent.

How does deferred interest work on a Synchrony card?

Under a deferred-interest promotion, interest accrues from the purchase date but is waived only if the full promotional balance is paid before the promotion ends. If any balance remains on that date, the accrued interest is added retroactively. This is disclosed in the terms, but it is the single largest source of surprise on these accounts — Synchrony's 3,054 fees-and-interest complaints since January 2025 reflect it.

What was GE Capital Retail Bank?

GE Capital Retail Bank was Synchrony Bank's former name. The bank was spun out of General Electric and rebranded as Synchrony. Legacy accounts and older collection records sometimes still reference the GE name, so a tradeline naming GE Capital Retail Bank and one naming Synchrony Bank may be the same underlying account — which also means they should not both be reporting as separate open accounts.

Can a CareCredit account be disputed?

A CareCredit tradeline can be disputed on the same grounds as any other account: inaccurate balance, inaccurate payment history, wrong account status, re-aged delinquency date, or an account that is not yours. Medical-adjacent financing has an extra wrinkle worth checking — whether the procedure was actually performed and billed as agreed, and whether insurance later paid part of it. Results depend on what Synchrony can verify.
