Cash App / Afterpay on Your Credit Report
In short: This entity sits within the Block group and is associated with Cash App and Afterpay consumer credit and payment programmes, including buy-now-pay-later instalments and borrowing features. Banking services are provided by partner banks. Information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable can be disputed under the FCRA. Outcomes depend on what the furnisher can verify, and results vary.
Who Cash App actually is
Who actually issues this credit
This entity is not a chartered bank. Cash App's own disclosures state that eligible funds may be held at partner banks including Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., Sutton Bank and The Bancorp Bank, N.A., each Member FDIC, and that funds may be swept among those banks. No FDIC certificate is asserted here because the charters belong to those partner banks.
What makes this creditor different
Cash App's own disclosures describe a sweep structure in which a customer's funds may sit at any of several named partner banks — Wells Fargo Bank N.A., Sutton Bank or The Bancorp Bank N.A. — and may move between them without notice. The CFPB recorded 1,879 credit-card complaints naming this entity since January 2025, led by fees or interest (383).
How Cash App appears on your credit report
Consumers experience Cash App and Afterpay as apps, not as lenders, so a tradeline from a corporate entity name they have never seen is genuinely disorienting. Afterpay instalment plans and Cash App borrowing are different products with different terms. Before disputing as fraudulent, check whether you used either service, and match the amount against your purchase history.

Grounds to dispute a Cash App entry
Each of these is a reason a Cash App tradeline may be inaccurate or unverifiable. None of them assures removal — they are the angles worth checking on your own report.
- ◆Tradeline reporting under an unfamiliar corporate entity name rather than Cash App or Afterpay
- ◆Afterpay instalment plan reported as open after the final payment
- ◆Refunded purchase still reflected as an outstanding instalment balance
- ◆Account balance or credit limit reported incorrectly
- ◆Payment reported late when it was made inside the grace period
- ◆Date of first delinquency re-aged to extend how long it can report
- ◆Account still reporting as open after it was closed, or vice versa
- ◆Duplicate tradeline for the same account after an internal transfer
- ◆Account belongs to someone else with a similar name, or is the result of identity theft
Disputing an original creditor is not the same as disputing a collector
Cash App / Afterpay is an original creditor — the institution whose name was on the account when it was opened. That matters for two reasons. First, the FDCPA, which governs debt collectors, generally does not apply to a creditor collecting its own debt in its own name, so the “debt validation” request that works against a collection agency is not the right tool here. Second, as the furnisher of the tradeline, Cash App / Afterpay has direct obligations under FCRA §623 to investigate a dispute you send it and to correct or delete information it cannot verify as accurate.
Dispute with the bureaus — FCRA §611
File with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. They must generally investigate within 30 days and tell the furnisher. Free, and you can do it yourself.
Dispute with the furnisher — FCRA §623
Send Cash App / Afterpay a direct written dispute. It must investigate and must not continue reporting information it knows is inaccurate. Keep copies and proof of delivery.
Cash App / Afterpay questions, answered
Is Cash App a bank?
No. This entity is not an FDIC-insured bank and holds no FDIC certificate. Cash App's own disclosures identify Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., Sutton Bank and The Bancorp Bank, N.A. as partner banks holding eligible funds.
Why is Cash App on my credit report?
If you used Afterpay instalments or a Cash App borrowing feature, that obligation can be furnished to the bureaus. The name on the tradeline may be a corporate entity rather than the Cash App or Afterpay brand you recognise.
What do people complain to the CFPB about most with Cash App?
Of the 1,879 credit-card complaints naming Cash App in the CFPB's public database since January 2025, the largest category is "Fees or interest" at 383, followed by "Getting a credit card" (284). Snapshot taken 2026-10-17. These are public statistics about the company, not a forecast for your account.
How do I dispute a Cash App account?
Dispute with all three bureaus under FCRA §611 and with the furnisher under FCRA §623. With a partner-bank program, check your report for the same debt appearing twice — once under the program brand and once under the issuing bank — because that duplicate is a common and genuinely disputable error. Send it in writing and keep copies; results vary with what can be verified.

Crowned Credit is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Cash App / Afterpay; company names are used only to identify the institution a consumer may see on a credit report.
