Charles Schwab on Your Credit Report

In short: The Charles Schwab Corporation is a brokerage and wealth-management firm that also operates a banking subsidiary and offers co-branded credit cards issued by a partner bank. Its consumer credit exposure centres on brokerage-linked lending and cards rather than mass-market card issuance. Information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable can be disputed under the FCRA. Outcomes depend on what the furnisher can verify, and results vary.

Who Schwab actually is

Who actually issues this credit

Schwab's own disclosures state that the Schwab-branded cards under its programme are issued by American Express National Bank and not by Charles Schwab & Co., Inc., and that its banking subsidiary Charles Schwab Bank, SSB is a Member FDIC institution providing deposit and lending services. This page asserts no FDIC certificate for the holding company, because the card charter belongs to American Express National Bank.

What makes this creditor different

Schwab is a brokerage whose credit cards are issued by a completely different bank — its own disclosures state explicitly that the cards are issued by American Express National Bank and not by Charles Schwab & Co. The CFPB recorded 11 credit-card complaints naming the Schwab holding company since January 2025, led by a disputed purchase on a statement (7).

How Schwab appears on your credit report

A Schwab-branded card reports through American Express National Bank, so the tradeline may carry the American Express name rather than Schwab. Separately, Schwab's pledged-asset lines are collateralised by brokerage holdings and are structurally different from unsecured revolving credit. Confirm which product a tradeline represents before disputing, because the two have very different characteristics.

Grounds to dispute a Schwab entry

Each of these is a reason a Schwab tradeline may be inaccurate or unverifiable. None of them assures removal — they are the angles worth checking on your own report.

  • ◆Schwab-branded card reporting under American Express National Bank
  • ◆Pledged-asset line reported as unsecured revolving debt
  • ◆Brokerage-linked account reported as a consumer credit card
  • ◆Account balance or credit limit reported incorrectly
  • ◆Payment reported late when it was made inside the grace period
  • ◆Date of first delinquency re-aged to extend how long it can report
  • ◆Account still reporting as open after it was closed, or vice versa
  • ◆Duplicate tradeline for the same account after an internal transfer
  • ◆Account belongs to someone else with a similar name, or is the result of identity theft

Disputing an original creditor is not the same as disputing a collector

Charles Schwab is an original creditor — the institution whose name was on the account when it was opened. That matters for two reasons. First, the FDCPA, which governs debt collectors, generally does not apply to a creditor collecting its own debt in its own name, so the “debt validation” request that works against a collection agency is not the right tool here. Second, as the furnisher of the tradeline, Charles Schwab has direct obligations under FCRA §623 to investigate a dispute you send it and to correct or delete information it cannot verify as accurate.

Dispute with the bureaus — FCRA §611

File with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. They must generally investigate within 30 days and tell the furnisher. Free, and you can do it yourself.

Dispute with the furnisher — FCRA §623

Send Charles Schwab a direct written dispute. It must investigate and must not continue reporting information it knows is inaccurate. Keep copies and proof of delivery.

Charles Schwab questions, answered

Is Schwab a bank?

The Charles Schwab Corporation is a holding company with a banking subsidiary, Charles Schwab Bank, SSB, Member FDIC. However, Schwab's own disclosures state that the Schwab-branded cards are issued by American Express National Bank, not by Schwab, so no card-issuing certificate is asserted for Schwab here.

Why is Schwab on my credit report?

If you hold a Schwab-branded credit card, a pledged-asset line, or a mortgage through Schwab's bank, that account is furnished to the bureaus. A Schwab card tradeline may well appear under American Express National Bank.

What do people complain to the CFPB about most with Schwab?

Of the 11 credit-card complaints naming Schwab in the CFPB's public database since January 2025, the largest category is "Problem with a purchase shown on your statement" at 7, followed by "Getting a credit card" (2). Snapshot taken 2026-10-17. These are public statistics about the company, not a forecast for your account.

How do I dispute a Schwab account?

Dispute with all three bureaus under FCRA §611 and with the furnisher under FCRA §623. With a partner-bank program, check your report for the same debt appearing twice — once under the program brand and once under the issuing bank — because that duplicate is a common and genuinely disputable error. Send it in writing and keep copies; results vary with what can be verified.
