Greenlight on Your Credit Report
In short: Greenlight provides debit cards and money-management tools for children and teenagers, administered by a parent or guardian through an app, with banking services provided by a partner bank. Information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable can be disputed under the FCRA. Outcomes depend on what the furnisher can verify, and results vary.
Who Greenlight actually is
Who actually issues this credit
Greenlight is not a chartered bank. Greenlight's own disclosures state that the Greenlight card is issued by Community Federal Savings Bank, Member FDIC, under a Mastercard license, and that the app facilitates banking services through that bank. No FDIC certificate is asserted for Greenlight because the charter belongs to Community Federal Savings Bank.
What makes this creditor different
Greenlight is built for children and teenagers under parental control, which makes it one of the few products here where the cardholder is a minor — and minors generally should not have credit tradelines at all. Greenlight's own disclosures identify Community Federal Savings Bank as issuer. The CFPB recorded 5 credit-card complaints naming Greenlight since January 2025, led by fees or interest (2).
How Greenlight appears on your credit report
Greenlight's primary products are debit rather than credit, so they generally should not create credit tradelines for the child. If a credit entry appears in a minor's name, that is a serious signal: children are frequent identity-theft targets precisely because the fraud can go undetected for years. A parent who finds any credit tradeline for a minor should obtain the child's full report from all three bureaus and dispute promptly.

What consumers report to the CFPB
These are counts of complaints filed with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau about credit cards, from the CFPB's public complaint database. They describe the company's complaint history — they are not a prediction about any individual account.

Grounds to dispute a Greenlight entry
Each of these is a reason a Greenlight tradeline may be inaccurate or unverifiable. None of them assures removal — they are the angles worth checking on your own report.
- ◆Any credit tradeline appearing in a minor's name
- ◆Parent's account activity reported against the child or vice versa
- ◆Deposit account reported as a credit obligation
- ◆Account balance or credit limit reported incorrectly
- ◆Payment reported late when it was made inside the grace period
- ◆Date of first delinquency re-aged to extend how long it can report
- ◆Account still reporting as open after it was closed, or vice versa
- ◆Duplicate tradeline for the same account after an internal transfer
- ◆Account belongs to someone else with a similar name, or is the result of identity theft
Disputing an original creditor is not the same as disputing a collector
Greenlight is an original creditor — the institution whose name was on the account when it was opened. That matters for two reasons. First, the FDCPA, which governs debt collectors, generally does not apply to a creditor collecting its own debt in its own name, so the “debt validation” request that works against a collection agency is not the right tool here. Second, as the furnisher of the tradeline, Greenlight has direct obligations under FCRA §623 to investigate a dispute you send it and to correct or delete information it cannot verify as accurate.
Dispute with the bureaus — FCRA §611
File with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. They must generally investigate within 30 days and tell the furnisher. Free, and you can do it yourself.
Dispute with the furnisher — FCRA §623
Send Greenlight a direct written dispute. It must investigate and must not continue reporting information it knows is inaccurate. Keep copies and proof of delivery.
Greenlight questions, answered
Is Greenlight a bank?
No. Greenlight Financial Technology is not an FDIC-insured bank and holds no FDIC certificate. Greenlight's own disclosures state that the Greenlight card is issued by Community Federal Savings Bank, Member FDIC.
Why is Greenlight on my credit report?
Greenlight's youth debit products generally do not create credit tradelines. If a Greenlight-related credit entry appears — particularly in a child's name — treat it as a possible identity-theft or mixed-file issue and check the minor's report at all three bureaus.
What do people complain to the CFPB about most with Greenlight?
Of the 5 credit-card complaints naming Greenlight in the CFPB's public database since January 2025, the largest category is "Fees or interest" at 2, followed by "Getting a credit card" (2). Snapshot taken 2026-10-17. These are public statistics about the company, not a forecast for your account.
How do I dispute a Greenlight account?
Dispute with all three bureaus under FCRA §611 and with the furnisher under FCRA §623. With a partner-bank program, check your report for the same debt appearing twice — once under the program brand and once under the issuing bank — because that duplicate is a common and genuinely disputable error. Send it in writing and keep copies; results vary with what can be verified.
