M1 Finance on Your Credit Report

In short: M1 Finance offers automated investing alongside borrowing and spending products, including margin-style portfolio lines of credit, personal loans and a savings account provided through a partner bank. Information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable can be disputed under the FCRA. Outcomes depend on what the furnisher can verify, and results vary.

Who M1 actually is

Who actually issues this credit

M1 is not itself a chartered bank. M1's own disclosures state that M1 High-Yield Savings Accounts and Personal Loans are furnished by B2 Bank NA, Member FDIC, and serviced by M1 Spend LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of M1 Holdings. No FDIC certificate is asserted for M1 Holdings because the charter belongs to B2 Bank NA.

What makes this creditor different

M1 combines brokerage investing with borrowing against the portfolio, so a consumer's credit line can be collateralised by securities whose value moves daily. M1's own disclosures name B2 Bank NA as the bank furnishing its savings and personal-loan products. The CFPB recorded 4 credit-card complaints naming M1 Holdings since January 2025, led by other features, terms or problems (2).

How M1 appears on your credit report

Borrowing against a brokerage portfolio is structurally different from unsecured revolving credit: the lender can force liquidation if collateral value falls, and the obligation may or may not report like a conventional card. If a portfolio line reports as unsecured revolving debt, it can distort utilisation in ways that misrepresent the actual risk. Check how the account is characterised, not just the balance.

These are counts of complaints filed with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau about credit cards, from the CFPB's public complaint database. They describe the company's complaint history — they are not a prediction about any individual account.

Grounds to dispute a M1 entry

Each of these is a reason a M1 tradeline may be inaccurate or unverifiable. None of them assures removal — they are the angles worth checking on your own report.

  • ◆Portfolio line of credit reported as unsecured revolving debt
  • ◆Personal loan reporting under B2 Bank NA rather than M1
  • ◆Balance reflecting a forced liquidation that was already applied
  • ◆Account balance or credit limit reported incorrectly
  • ◆Payment reported late when it was made inside the grace period
  • ◆Date of first delinquency re-aged to extend how long it can report
  • ◆Account still reporting as open after it was closed, or vice versa
  • ◆Duplicate tradeline for the same account after an internal transfer
  • ◆Account belongs to someone else with a similar name, or is the result of identity theft

Disputing an original creditor is not the same as disputing a collector

M1 Finance is an original creditor — the institution whose name was on the account when it was opened. That matters for two reasons. First, the FDCPA, which governs debt collectors, generally does not apply to a creditor collecting its own debt in its own name, so the “debt validation” request that works against a collection agency is not the right tool here. Second, as the furnisher of the tradeline, M1 Finance has direct obligations under FCRA §623 to investigate a dispute you send it and to correct or delete information it cannot verify as accurate.

Dispute with the bureaus — FCRA §611

File with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. They must generally investigate within 30 days and tell the furnisher. Free, and you can do it yourself.

Dispute with the furnisher — FCRA §623

Send M1 Finance a direct written dispute. It must investigate and must not continue reporting information it knows is inaccurate. Keep copies and proof of delivery.

M1 Finance questions, answered

Is M1 a bank?

No. M1 Holdings is not an FDIC-insured bank and holds no FDIC certificate. M1's own disclosures state that its High-Yield Savings Accounts and Personal Loans are furnished by B2 Bank NA, Member FDIC.

Why is M1 on my credit report?

If you borrowed through M1 — a portfolio line of credit, a personal loan or a card — that obligation can be furnished to the bureaus. The furnisher may be shown as M1 or as B2 Bank NA.

What do people complain to the CFPB about most with M1?

Of the 4 credit-card complaints naming M1 in the CFPB's public database since January 2025, the largest category is "Other features, terms, or problems" at 2, followed by "Closing your account" (1). Snapshot taken 2026-10-17. These are public statistics about the company, not a forecast for your account.

How do I dispute a M1 account?

Dispute with all three bureaus under FCRA §611 and with the furnisher under FCRA §623. With a partner-bank program, check your report for the same debt appearing twice — once under the program brand and once under the issuing bank — because that duplicate is a common and genuinely disputable error. Send it in writing and keep copies; results vary with what can be verified.
