Sunbit on Your Credit Report

In short: Sunbit provides point-of-sale financing concentrated in auto service, dental and optical retail, along with the Sunbit Card. Its financing is typically offered at the moment of an unexpected expense rather than through a general-purpose application process. Information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable can be disputed under the FCRA. Outcomes depend on what the furnisher can verify, and results vary.

Who Sunbit actually is

Who actually issues this credit

Sunbit is not a chartered bank. Sunbit's own disclosures state that the Sunbit Card is issued by Transportation Alliance Bank, Inc., dba TAB Bank, pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. No FDIC certificate is asserted for Sunbit because the charter belongs to TAB Bank.

What makes this creditor different

Sunbit's point of sale is unusual — it is concentrated in auto repair shops, dental offices and optical retailers, places where a consumer is often facing an unplanned, non-deferrable bill. Its own disclosures confirm the Sunbit Card is issued by TAB Bank. The CFPB recorded 108 credit-card complaints naming Sunbit since January 2025, led by getting a credit card (27).

How Sunbit appears on your credit report

Sunbit financing is usually taken out under time pressure at a service counter — a car that will not be released, or a dental procedure already underway. Consumers frequently do not retain paperwork in that setting, so the first time they see the terms clearly is on the credit report. If the reported amount financed or payment schedule does not match what the merchant presented, that discrepancy is both documentable and disputable.

Grounds to dispute a Sunbit entry

Each of these is a reason a Sunbit tradeline may be inaccurate or unverifiable. None of them assures removal — they are the angles worth checking on your own report.

  • ◆Amount financed on the tradeline not matching the merchant's invoice
  • ◆Account reporting under TAB Bank rather than the Sunbit brand
  • ◆Financing reported as open after the service was refunded or the charge reversed
  • ◆Account balance or credit limit reported incorrectly
  • ◆Payment reported late when it was made inside the grace period
  • ◆Date of first delinquency re-aged to extend how long it can report
  • ◆Account still reporting as open after it was closed, or vice versa
  • ◆Duplicate tradeline for the same account after an internal transfer
  • ◆Account belongs to someone else with a similar name, or is the result of identity theft

Disputing an original creditor is not the same as disputing a collector

Sunbit is an original creditor — the institution whose name was on the account when it was opened. That matters for two reasons. First, the FDCPA, which governs debt collectors, generally does not apply to a creditor collecting its own debt in its own name, so the “debt validation” request that works against a collection agency is not the right tool here. Second, as the furnisher of the tradeline, Sunbit has direct obligations under FCRA §623 to investigate a dispute you send it and to correct or delete information it cannot verify as accurate.

Dispute with the bureaus — FCRA §611

File with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. They must generally investigate within 30 days and tell the furnisher. Free, and you can do it yourself.

Dispute with the furnisher — FCRA §623

Send Sunbit a direct written dispute. It must investigate and must not continue reporting information it knows is inaccurate. Keep copies and proof of delivery.

Sunbit questions, answered

Is Sunbit a bank?

No. Sunbit is not an FDIC-insured bank and holds no FDIC certificate. Sunbit's own disclosures state that the Sunbit Card is issued by Transportation Alliance Bank, Inc., doing business as TAB Bank, under a Visa license.

Why is Sunbit on my credit report?

If you financed an auto repair, dental treatment or eyewear purchase through Sunbit at the point of sale, that credit account can be furnished to the bureaus. The tradeline may name Sunbit or the issuing bank, TAB Bank.

What do people complain to the CFPB about most with Sunbit?

Of the 108 credit-card complaints naming Sunbit in the CFPB's public database since January 2025, the largest category is "Getting a credit card" at 27, followed by "Problem with a purchase shown on your statement" (23). Snapshot taken 2026-10-17. These are public statistics about the company, not a forecast for your account.

How do I dispute a Sunbit account?

Dispute with all three bureaus under FCRA §611 and with the furnisher under FCRA §623. With a partner-bank program, check your report for the same debt appearing twice — once under the program brand and once under the issuing bank — because that duplicate is a common and genuinely disputable error. Send it in writing and keep copies; results vary with what can be verified.
