Zip on Your Credit Report
In short: Zip is a buy-now-pay-later provider that splits purchases into instalments at online and in-store checkout, operating in the United States under the Zip brand after previously using the Quadpay name. Information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable can be disputed under the FCRA. Outcomes depend on what the furnisher can verify, and results vary.
Who Zip actually is
Who actually issues this credit
Zip is not a chartered bank. Zip's own US disclosures state that financing through Zip is issued by WebBank. No FDIC certificate is asserted for Zip because the charter belongs to WebBank.
What makes this creditor different
Zip entered the United States largely through the Quadpay brand, so a consumer's oldest Zip-related account may still carry the Quadpay name. Zip's own disclosures confirm WebBank as the issuer. The CFPB recorded 75 credit-card complaints naming Zip since January 2025, led by a disputed purchase on a statement (54).
How Zip appears on your credit report
The Quadpay-to-Zip rebrand means one consumer can hold accounts under two different brand names for the same provider, and the issuing bank is a third name again. When reviewing a report, treat Quadpay, Zip and WebBank entries as potentially the same relationship and look for the same balance appearing twice rather than assuming two separate debts.

What consumers report to the CFPB
These are counts of complaints filed with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau about credit cards, from the CFPB's public complaint database. They describe the company's complaint history — they are not a prediction about any individual account.

Grounds to dispute a Zip entry
Each of these is a reason a Zip tradeline may be inaccurate or unverifiable. None of them assures removal — they are the angles worth checking on your own report.
- ◆Legacy Quadpay plan reporting alongside a Zip account for the same balance
- ◆Instalment plan reporting under WebBank rather than Zip
- ◆Returned purchase still showing an open instalment balance
- ◆Account balance or credit limit reported incorrectly
- ◆Payment reported late when it was made inside the grace period
- ◆Date of first delinquency re-aged to extend how long it can report
- ◆Account still reporting as open after it was closed, or vice versa
- ◆Duplicate tradeline for the same account after an internal transfer
- ◆Account belongs to someone else with a similar name, or is the result of identity theft
Disputing an original creditor is not the same as disputing a collector
Zip is an original creditor — the institution whose name was on the account when it was opened. That matters for two reasons. First, the FDCPA, which governs debt collectors, generally does not apply to a creditor collecting its own debt in its own name, so the “debt validation” request that works against a collection agency is not the right tool here. Second, as the furnisher of the tradeline, Zip has direct obligations under FCRA §623 to investigate a dispute you send it and to correct or delete information it cannot verify as accurate.
Dispute with the bureaus — FCRA §611
File with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. They must generally investigate within 30 days and tell the furnisher. Free, and you can do it yourself.
Dispute with the furnisher — FCRA §623
Send Zip a direct written dispute. It must investigate and must not continue reporting information it knows is inaccurate. Keep copies and proof of delivery.
Zip questions, answered
Is Zip a bank?
No. Zip Co US is not an FDIC-insured bank and holds no FDIC certificate. Zip's own disclosures state that financing through Zip is issued by WebBank.
Why is Zip on my credit report?
If you used Zip — or Quadpay before the rebrand — to split a purchase into instalments, that plan can be furnished to the credit bureaus. The tradeline may appear under Zip, Quadpay or WebBank.
What do people complain to the CFPB about most with Zip?
Of the 75 credit-card complaints naming Zip in the CFPB's public database since January 2025, the largest category is "Problem with a purchase shown on your statement" at 54, followed by "Other features, terms, or problems" (6). Snapshot taken 2026-10-17. These are public statistics about the company, not a forecast for your account.
How do I dispute a Zip account?
Dispute with all three bureaus under FCRA §611 and with the furnisher under FCRA §623. With a partner-bank program, check your report for the same debt appearing twice — once under the program brand and once under the issuing bank — because that duplicate is a common and genuinely disputable error. Send it in writing and keep copies; results vary with what can be verified.

Crowned Credit is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Zip; company names are used only to identify the institution a consumer may see on a credit report. Crowned Credit does not promise any particular outcome; results vary by individual circumstances and by what a furnisher is able to verify. Accurate, verifiable information generally cannot be removed from a credit report. You have the right to dispute inaccurate information yourself, for free, directly with the credit bureaus and with the furnisher.
