An authorized user (AU) is someone who is added to another person's credit card account. The primary cardholder is responsible for all charges and payments, but the AU gets the account's entire history added to their credit report. This can be a powerful shortcut for building credit age and payment history.
How It Works
When you're added as an authorized user, the credit card company reports the account to your credit file. In most cases, the account's full history appears — including the date it was opened, the credit limit, and the payment history. If a parent adds you to a card they've had for 15 years with perfect payment history, you inherit all of that.
You don't even need to use the card. You can be added, never touch the physical card, and still get the credit benefit. Many parents add their children as authorized users specifically for this purpose.
What Makes a Good AU Account
Not all AU accounts are created equal. Look for:
- Long history: The older the account, the more it helps your credit age
- Perfect payment history: Any late payments on the account will hurt you too
- Low utilization: A high balance on the card increases YOUR utilization
- High credit limit: A $10,000 limit adds more to your total available credit than a $500 limit
- Reports to all three bureaus: Most major card issuers report AU accounts, but verify
What Makes a Bad AU Account
- Late payments: The primary holder's missed payments will appear on YOUR report
- High utilization: If they're maxed out, that utilization hits your score too
- Recent account: A card opened 6 months ago doesn't help much with credit age
- Issuer doesn't report AU accounts: Not all do. American Express, Chase, Capital One, and most major issuers do.
Who to Ask
The best AU arrangements involve family members who trust you:
- Parents — The most common AU arrangement. Parents with long credit histories can dramatically boost their children's credit.
- Spouse or partner — Building credit together
- Close family members — Siblings, grandparents, aunts/uncles with strong credit
Important: Reassure the primary holder that they're not giving you access to their money. They can add you without giving you the physical card. Their liability is the same whether you use the card or not — they're responsible for all charges regardless.

Book Free ConsultationHow Much Does It Help?
The impact depends on your current credit profile and the quality of the AU account:
- No credit history: Adding one strong AU account can create a score of 650-700+ almost immediately
- Thin file (1-2 accounts): A long-history AU can significantly boost average account age
- Established credit with negatives: Helps by adding positive history but won't eliminate the impact of negative items
Limitations and Risks
- Not all scoring models treat AU accounts equally: FICO generally includes AU accounts. Some lenders may give them less weight during manual underwriting.
- Mortgage lenders may discount AU accounts: During the mortgage process, underwriters may disregard AU accounts and focus on accounts you're directly responsible for.
- You can be removed at any time: The primary holder can remove you, and the account will eventually fall off your report.
- Their mistakes hurt you: If the primary holder starts missing payments after you're added, your score suffers.
Buying AU "Tradelines" — A Warning
There's an industry that sells authorized user positions on strangers' credit cards. You pay $200-1,000+ to be added to someone's old, high-limit card for a few months.
While not technically illegal, this practice is:
- Risky: Some scoring models can detect and ignore purchased tradelines
- Temporary: You're typically removed after a few months, and the benefit disappears
- Against card issuer terms: Banks can and do close accounts involved in tradeline selling
- Potentially considered fraud: If used to deceive a lender, it could cross legal lines
We recommend only organic AU relationships with family members. The benefit is real, long-lasting, and completely legitimate.
AU Strategy Combined With Credit Repair
The authorized user strategy works best as part of a complete plan: dispute negative items, add positive accounts (AU + secured card), and maintain disciplined habits. This three-pronged approach produces the fastest results.
